Post GW2 Conversion: Just A Dream

NOTE: THIS IS ABOUT A GW1 CONVERSION, SORRY FOR MESSING UP THE TITLE!

You've all heard how Counter Strike was spawned from the bowels of Half-Life, right? Well, I'm a bit of a World War II nut, and I think it'd be great to have an RPG just like Guild Wars set up in the European Theater of War. Take a small sample trip with me, and post whether you like my suggestion or not. I doubt it'll ever be initiated, but what a thought...

Classes

Infantry

Basically, this is like a warrior but with a ranger-esque touch! They wear the heaviest armor and can equip either heavy rifles like the BAR or machine guns. However, machine gun usage is similar to a ranger using a pet. You need a skill to wield one into battle, and it’ll have a mini tab right underneath the character, like a hero. The gun can overheat and so another skill may be necessary for increased performance. So this basically creates something very close to using a pet. More on this in the “skills” section.

Using a heavy rifle will be like a sword, axe, or hammer. They all have their unique characteristics, range, and firing speed. The machine gun will do a moderate amount of damage and have a high firing rate while the heavy rifles will be somewhere in-between.

(Primary) Endurance: Increases Armor per attribute point.
Heavy Weapons Training: Increases damage dealt using heavy rifles and allows the use of skills.
Machine Gunner: Same as heavy weapons training.
Morale: This would work similar to a Warrior’s Tactics line.

Medic

This is your healer. Using some ranged abilities, perhaps auras or shouts the Medic can keep a character healed, but his most powerful abilities are performed up close and personal. They can be equipped with a pistol and medical bag. They may be augmented to perform offensive abilities, but like monks in Guild Wars they are better suited to keeping the frontlines alive.

(Primary) Battlefield Experience: Increases the speed in which the medic can use skills, like a mesmer’s fast casting ability.
First Aid: Self-explanatory, works like healing prayers, but along the close-up skill line up.
Fast Response: Increases ranged healing abilities.
Self-Defense: Increases defensive abilities and pistol damage.

Rifleman

Rifleman are equipped with slow firing but long range weapons that do a large amount of damage. While the infantry can do midrange and mid-damage assaults, the rifleman uses more precise shots and skills to take down single foes. This could be a cross between the assassin and ranger. They can equip rifles such as M1 Garands or slower-firing but more damaging sniper rifles.

(Primary) Relaxed State: Increases armor penetration of rifle shots. This would work along the lines of a warrior’s strength ability.
Marksmanship: Allows the use of rifles.
Scout Training: Increases skills that deal with movement and attack speed.
Sniper Training: Allows the use of sniper rifles.

I have other class ideas, but since this is just a sample, I’ll leave the commander and specialist professions out for now. Basically, the commander would act like a paragon and the specialist would use the heaviest weapons like bazookas and flamethrowers for AoE damage.

Skills

A sample of skills as follows:

Infantry

Deploy, 2 second activation, no recharge: (Stance) Allows the use of the machine gun in the battlefield. While deploy is active, player cannot move.
Douse, 1 second activation, 5 second recharge: Cools the machinegun down by x%. If the machinegun was completely overheated, this skills takes an extra x seconds to recharge.
Cover Fire, 5 stamina, 3 second recharge (works like energy): Attack speed increases by 33% but you have a 25% chance to miss. (Machine Gun.)
Controlled Burst, uses adrenaline (4): If equipped with a heavy rifle, your shots strike for +x damage but you attack -25% slower.
Aggressive Shot, adrenaline (6): If equipped with a heavy rifle, target foe is within earshot, do +x damage.
“I need backup!” (Shout, 5 stamina, 20 second recharge): If you’re below 50% health, gain +x armor for every ally nearby.

Medic

“You’ll Be Okay!” 5 stamina, 2 second recharge: Target other ally is gains +x regeneration.
Quick Fix, 10 stamina, touch range, 5 second recharge: Target ally is healed for +x health.
Reassuring Words, 5 stamina, 2 second recharge: Target ally is healed for +100 health. If target ally is under attack, they gain +50 health instead.
Tourniquet, 5 stamina, 4 second recharge: Target ally loses one condition.
“Don’t Shoot!”: Target foes within sight deal x less damage to you.

Rifleman:

Potshot, 5 stamina, no recharge: Deal +x damage to target foe. You have a x% chance to miss.
Calming Breaths, preparation, 10 stamina, 20 second recharge: For x seconds, you deal +x damage but move x% slower.
Ironsights, 5 stamina, 10 second recharge: For x seconds you have x% more range and line of sight, but deal x less damage.
Spotter, preparation, 5 stamina, 30 second recharge: For x seconds you don’t attack but nearby Machine Gunners do +x damage.
Maiming Shot, 10 stamina, 8 second recharge: Deal +x damage and cause bleeding to target foe.

PvP

PvP would be like Alliance Battles in Factions. The losing map for the allies would be Normandy, where they have to establish a beach head, the middle ground would be (for the sake of example) the Ardennes Forest, and the losing map for the Axis would be the Rhine river.

PvE

PvE would take place in several outposts around Europe and Africa and would deal with several missions. Enemies would vary from rebels to organized military squads. Tanks and other vehicles could be used much like siege devourers or wurms. In fact, some missions or areas require the use of such things to get past greater enemies, who have heavily fortified positions and so forth.

Drops would vary depending on the level of the enemies, and in the beginning you would get very basic, perhaps WW1 era gear. Elite armor would be available later on, and it would be distinguished by medals, heavier and more durable looking gear, and generally a more pristine look.

You would start the game without a side to play, perhaps working as a mercenary or a local milita force. Eventually through quests of your choosing, you would end up either working for the Allies or Axis. Basically, the concept is similar to that of the Kurzicks and Luxons.

Titles

Titles would be available in the game. If you beat it, you could have a title like “Allied Veteran”.

Other titles would be related to reputation, similar to those seen in EN and NF. They would use military ranks:

R1 Axis/American Private
R2 Corporal
R3 Sergeant

And so on, until you reach the max rank, which would be General. These titles would bestow certain benefits to the player in both PvE and PvP, making them a difficult but also high priority target.

Other titles are also possible, such as explorer:

50% Axis/Allied Traveler
60% Axis/Allied Scout
70% Axis/Allied Guide
80% Axis/Allied Pathfinder

And so on.

Secondary Classes And Misc

You could mix and match just like in Guild Wars creating unique possibilities. Furthermore, there would be skills that synch with other professions, as sampled in the spotter skill. Perhaps you could be a pistol wielding rifleman or a medic with a sniper rifle, who knows? Basically, this would be Guild Wars in WW2.

I’m sure most of you are more comfortable with the fantasy setting, and I too am awaiting GW2 and seeing all the new races intermingle with each other in a whole new plot, but hey…I just had to get this out of my system!

Thank you for reading.
